Description

Turtle Bars are a decadent layered dessert combining a buttery brown sugar crust with a luscious sweetened condensed milk topping, studded with semisweet chocolate chips and chopped pecans, and drizzled with rich caramel sauce. Finished with an optional sprinkle of sea salt, these bars offer a perfect balance of sweet, nutty, and slightly salty flavors ideal for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the crust:

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • ½ teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup unsalted butter, softened

For the topping:

  • 1 (14 oz) can sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups semisweet chocolate chips
  • 1½ cups chopped pecans
  • ½ cup caramel sauce (store-bought or homemade)
  • Sea salt for sprinkling (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Line a 9×13-inch baking pan with parchment paper, leaving an overhang on the sides to easily lift the bars out later.
  2. Make the crust: In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, packed brown sugar, and salt. Cut in the softened unsalted butter using a pastry cutter or fork until the mixture becomes crumbly. Press this mixture evenly into the bottom of the prepared baking pan to form the crust.
  3. Bake the crust: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake for 15 to 18 minutes until the crust is lightly golden. This creates a sturdy base for the toppings.
  4. Prepare the topping: While the crust is baking, gather your toppings. Once the crust is hot out of the oven, evenly spread the sweetened condensed milk over it as the first topping layer.
  5. Add chocolate and nuts: Sprinkle the semisweet chocolate chips evenly over the sweetened condensed milk, followed by an even layer of chopped pecans. These ingredients add texture and classic turtle flavor.
  6. Drizzle caramel: Drizzle the caramel sauce over the chocolate chips and pecans, making sure to cover evenly for rich, gooey pockets of caramel in every bite.
  7. Bake the assembled bars: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes. You’ll know it’s ready when the edges are bubbly and the top is slightly golden.
  8. Cool and chill: Remove the pan from the oven and allow the bars to cool completely at room temperature in the pan. Once cooled, refrigerate the bars to make slicing easier and to help the layers set firmly.
  9. Slice and serve: Use the parchment paper overhang to lift the bars from the pan. Slice into 24 squares and optionally sprinkle with sea salt to enhance the flavors before serving.

Notes
