Description

This Taco Pie is a delicious and easy-to-make savory dish that combines seasoned ground beef, black beans or corn, and melted cheddar cheese baked inside a golden crescent dough crust. Perfect for a family dinner, it’s served with classic taco toppings like sour cream, salsa, green onions, and cilantro for an irresistible Tex-Mex inspired meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb ground beef (or turkey for a leaner option)
  • 1 packet taco seasoning (or homemade taco seasoning)
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 can (4 oz) diced green chilies (optional for extra heat)
  • 1 cup diced onion (optional)
  • 1 cup black beans (drained and rinsed) or corn (optional)
  • 1 can (8 oz) refrigerated crescent dough (or pie crust if preferred)
  • 1 1/2 cups shredded cheddar cheese (or a taco blend)

For Serving & Garnish

  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • Salsa
  • Chopped green onions
  • Chopped cilantro

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Grease or lightly spray a 9-inch pie dish or an oven-safe baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Cook Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, brown the ground beef. Use a spatula to break the meat into small crumbles as it cooks evenly.
  3. Season the Meat: Drain excess fat if needed. Stir in the taco seasoning and 1/2 cup water according to the seasoning instructions. Add diced green chilies and black beans or corn if using. Let the mixture simmer for 5-7 minutes until heated through and well combined.
  4. Prepare the Crust: Unroll the crescent dough and press it evenly into the prepared pie dish, pinching seams together to seal fully. A traditional pie crust can be used if preferred.
  5. Bake the Crust: Bake the crust for 8-10 minutes until it turns lightly golden. This partially bakes the dough to avoid sogginess once filling is added.
  6. Assemble the Pie: Spoon the seasoned taco filling evenly over the pre-baked crust and spread it into a uniform layer.
  7. Add Cheese: Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese generously over the taco filling for a melty, flavorful topping.
  8. Bake the Pie: Return the pie to the oven and bake an additional 10-12 minutes until the cheese is bubbly, melted, and the crust edge is golden brown.
  9. Cool and Serve: Remove the pie from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes. Slice and serve with sour cream, salsa, chopped green onions, and cilantro on top for fresh flavor.

Notes

  • For a leaner option, substitute ground turkey for beef.
  • Use homemade taco seasoning to control salt and spice levels.
  • Optional vegetables like diced onions, black beans, or corn add extra texture and nutrition.
  • Using crescent dough is quicker, but a traditional pie crust works well too.
  • Serve with your favorite taco toppings for added flavor and freshness.
  • Leftovers can be refrigerated for up to 3 days and reheated in the oven for best texture.
