Description

Indulge in the delightful flavors of this Swedish Apple Cake with Caramel. This moist and spiced cake topped with tender apple slices and a sweet caramel drizzle is the perfect dessert for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 2 large apples (peeled, cored, and thinly sliced)
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter (softened)
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup whole milk

For Topping:

  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce (plus more for drizzling)
  • powdered sugar for dusting (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat oven to 350°F and grease a 9-inch springform pan or round cake pan.
  2. Prepare Apples: Toss sliced apples with lemon juice and set aside.
  3. Mix Dry Ingredients: In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, cardamom, and salt.
  4. Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large mixing bowl, cream the butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
  5. Add Eggs and Flavorings: Add eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
  6. Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Alternately add the dry ingredients and milk to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
  7. Assemble and Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared pan, arrange apple slices on top, drizzle with caramel sauce, and bake for 40–45 minutes until done.
  8. Serve: Let cool slightly, then serve warm or at room temperature with extra caramel sauce and powdered sugar.

Notes

  • Best served slightly warm with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream.
  • Use tart apples like Granny Smith for the best flavor contrast with the caramel.
