Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
Filling
- 1 cup fresh spinach (chopped) or 1/2 cup frozen spinach (thawed and drained)
- 1/2 cup crumbled feta cheese
- 1/4 cup shredded mozzarella or Parmesan cheese
- 1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano (optional)
Topping
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
- Sesame seeds for topping (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare baking sheet: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper to prevent sticking and ensure even baking.
- Roll out puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet into a rectangle approximately 10×12 inches in size to create a thin, uniform base for the filling.
- Mix the filling: In a medium bowl, combine the chopped fresh spinach (or drained frozen spinach), crumbled feta cheese, shredded mozzarella or Parmesan, garlic powder, black pepper, and dried oregano if using. Stir well to evenly distribute the seasonings and cheeses.
- Assemble the pastry: Spread the spinach and cheese mixture evenly over half of the prepared puff pastry rectangle. Then, carefully fold the other half of the puff pastry over the filling to cover it completely. Gently press down to seal and roll slightly to ensure the edges are closed.
- Cut and twist strips: Using a sharp knife or pizza cutter, cut the folded pastry into strips about 1 inch wide. Take each strip and twist it several times to create a spiral twist shape.
- Place and brush with egg wash: Arrange the twisted strips on the lined baking sheet, spaced slightly apart. Brush the tops of each twist with the beaten egg to help them brown beautifully and add a glossy finish. Optionally, sprinkle sesame seeds on top for added texture and flavor.
- Bake until golden and puffed: Bake in the preheated oven for 15 to 18 minutes, or until the pastry is puffed up, golden brown, and crisp.
- Cool and serve: Remove from the oven and let the twists cool slightly before serving. Enjoy them warm or at room temperature.
