Scale
Dough Ingredients
- 380 g (3 cups) all-purpose flour
- 20 g (3 tablespoons) cornstarch
- 7 g (1 teaspoon) salt
- 7 g (1 ½ teaspoon) dry yeast
- 40 g (3 tablespoons) butter, melted
- 150 ml (⅔ cup) hot milk
- 40 ml (3 tablespoons) vegetable oil
- 1 egg
- 50 g (⅝ cup) sugar
Toppings
- Melted butter (for brushing)
- Sesame seeds (for sprinkling)
- Egg yolk (for brushing before baking)
Instructions
- Prepare the Dough: In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, and dry yeast to evenly distribute the ingredients. Add the melted butter, hot milk, vegetable oil, egg, and sugar to the dry mixture, then knead thoroughly until you form a smooth, elastic dough.
- Let the Dough Rise: Cover the bowl containing the dough and place it in a warm area. Allow the dough to rest and rise for about 1 hour until it doubles in size, which ensures a light, airy texture.
- Shape the Rolls: After the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into equal portions. Roll each portion into a ball and then flatten it into a disc. Brush half of each disc with melted butter and sprinkle generously with sesame seeds for added flavor and texture.
- Form the Rolls: Roll the disc by overlapping the two halves and seal slightly. Arrange the shaped rolls on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover them again and let them rise a second time for approximately 1 hour to achieve a fluffy result.
- Bake the Rolls: Preheat your oven to 180°C (350°F). Just before baking, brush the rolls with beaten egg yolk to give them a glossy golden crust. Bake the rolls in the preheated oven for about 25 minutes or until the tops are beautifully golden brown.
- Serve: Remove the rolls from the oven and let them cool slightly. Serve warm to enjoy the soft, buttery texture paired with the nuttiness of sesame seeds.
Notes
- Ensure the milk is warm, not hot, to activate the yeast properly without killing it.
- You can substitute cornstarch with an equal amount of more flour if unavailable.
- Brushing with egg yolk gives rolls a shiny crust, but you can skip this for a more rustic look.
- Store leftover rolls in an airtight container; they keep fresh for 2-3 days.
- Reheat rolls in a warm oven or microwave to refresh texture before serving.
