Ingredients
Scale
Cracker Base
- 40 saltine crackers (about one sleeve)
Toffee Layer
- 1 cup unsalted butter
- 1 cup packed brown sugar
Topping
- 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips
- 1/2 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
- Sea salt for sprinkling (optional)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a 9×13-inch baking sheet with parchment paper or foil to prevent sticking and facilitate easy cleanup. Arrange the saltine crackers in a single layer to fully cover the bottom of the pan.
- Melt Butter and Sugar: In a medium saucepan, melt the unsalted butter and brown sugar together over medium heat while stirring constantly. Once the mixture reaches a boil, continue boiling for exactly 3 minutes without stirring to ensure a smooth toffee base.
- Pour Toffee Over Crackers: Immediately pour the hot toffee mixture evenly over the arranged saltine crackers. Use a spatula to spread the mixture quickly, covering all crackers to ensure each is coated.
- Bake the Toffee: Place the baking sheet in the oven and bake for 5 minutes. This step helps the toffee set and infuse the crackers with flavor.
- Add Chocolate Topping: Remove the pan from the oven and sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the hot toffee layer. Allow the chips to sit for 2–3 minutes to melt thoroughly, then spread the melted chocolate evenly with a spatula.
- Finish with Nuts and Salt: Sprinkle chopped pecans or walnuts and a pinch of sea salt over the melted chocolate, if using. This adds a delicious crunch and enhances the flavor with a subtle salty touch.
- Cool and Refrigerate: Let the toffee cool at room temperature briefly, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until fully set. Once firm, break into pieces and serve.
Notes
- Store the toffee in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 1 week to maintain freshness and crunch.
- For a variation, substitute semi-sweet chocolate with white chocolate or drizzle caramel over the top for added richness.
