Description

These Patty Melts with Secret Sauce are a delicious twist on a classic favorite, combining juicy seasoned beef patties, melted cheddar and provolone cheeses, and a savory bacon-infused secret sauce, all sandwiched between buttery toasted rye bread. Ready in just 30 minutes, this skillet-cooked sandwich is perfect for a satisfying lunch or dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Beef Patties

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Bread and Cheese

  • 6 slices rye bread
  • 6 slices cheddar cheese
  • 6 slices provolone cheese
  • 6 tablespoons butter, softened and unsalted

Secret Sauce

  • 1/4 cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons chopped bacon pieces
  • 3 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 teaspoon sugar
  • 1 teaspoon relish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Patties: Form the ground beef into 3 flattened patties and season each side with onion powder, garlic powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  2. Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet over medium-high heat and cook the patties until fully cooked through, about 4-5 minutes per side. Remove the patties from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Make the Secret Sauce: In a small bowl, combine mayonnaise, chopped bacon pieces, ketchup, sugar, and relish, stirring well to blend all the flavors.
  4. Toast the Bread: Butter one side of each slice of rye bread. Place the slices buttered side down in the skillet over medium heat to begin toasting.
  5. Assemble: On each piece of bread in the skillet, layer 2 slices of provolone cheese, one cooked beef patty, and 2 slices of cheddar cheese. Spread secret sauce on another bread slice and place it on top, buttered side up.
  6. Grill the Sandwiches: Grill the sandwiches in the skillet, flipping carefully once the cheese starts to melt and the bread is golden toasted on one side. Continue toasting the other side until golden brown and the cheese is fully melted, about 3-4 minutes per side.
  7. Serve: Remove the patty melts from the skillet and serve warm for the best flavor and texture.

Notes

  • For crispier bacon pieces in the secret sauce, cook bacon separately until crispy and drain before chopping.
  • You can substitute rye bread with sourdough or whole wheat bread if preferred.
  • Adjust seasoning to your taste when forming the beef patties.
  • Using softened butter ensures easier spreading and better browning on the bread.
  • To prevent sticking, wipe out the skillet or use a non-stick pan.
