Description

Ooey Gooey Butter Cake is a deliciously rich and indulgent American dessert featuring a buttery cake crust topped with a smooth, creamy cream cheese filling. This easy-to-make treat is slightly gooey in the center and beautifully golden around the edges—perfect for any occasion or a comforting sweet snack.

Ingredients

Scale

For the crust:

  • 1 box yellow cake mix (15.25 oz)
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 1 large egg

For the filling:

  • 1 (8-ounce) package cream cheese (softened)
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • ½ cup unsalted butter (melted)
  • 4 cups powdered sugar

Instructions

  1. Preheat and prepare baking dish: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
  2. Make the crust dough: In a mixing bowl, combine the yellow cake mix, melted butter, and 1 large egg. Mix until a soft dough forms.
  3. Press crust into pan: Evenly press the dough into the bottom of the prepared baking dish to create the crust layer.
  4. Prepare the filling: In another bowl, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Add the 2 eggs, vanilla extract, and melted butter. Mix well to combine.
  5. Add powdered sugar: Gradually add the powdered sugar to the cream cheese mixture, beating until the filling is smooth and fluffy.
  6. Assemble and spread filling: Pour the filling evenly over the crust in the baking dish and spread it out smoothly.
  7. Bake: Bake in the preheated oven for 40 to 45 minutes, until the edges are golden brown but the center remains slightly jiggly.
  8. Cool and set: Allow the cake to cool completely at room temperature. The center will firm up as it cools, making it easier to slice.

Notes

  • Do not overbake — the center should remain gooey for the perfect ooey gooey texture.
  • For a flavor twist, substitute lemon cake mix or swirl fruit jam into the filling before baking.
  • Store any leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 5 days to maintain freshness.
