Description

This classic Homemade Stuffing recipe features toasted day-old bread cubes mixed with sautéed onions, celery, and aromatic herbs, baked to golden perfection. Perfect as a flavorful side dish for holiday meals, it is moist, savory, and customizable with additions like sausage or cranberries.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 1 loaf (about 14 oz) day-old French or sourdough bread, cut into ½-inch cubes

Vegetables & Aromatics

  • 1 ½ cups chopped yellow onion
  • 1 ½ cups chopped celery
  • 3 garlic cloves, minced
  • 2 tablespoons chopped fresh parsley

Seasonings

  • 2 teaspoons poultry seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon dried sage
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

Liquids & Binder

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 ½ to 3 cups low-sodium chicken or vegetable broth
  • 2 large eggs, lightly beaten

Instructions

  1. Toast the bread cubes: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Spread the bread cubes on a large baking sheet and toast them for 10–15 minutes, stirring once, until they are dry and lightly golden. Remove from oven and allow to cool.
  2. Sauté the vegetables: In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery, cooking for 8–10 minutes until soft and fragrant. Stir in minced garlic, poultry seasoning, dried sage, salt, and black pepper; cook for an additional 1–2 minutes to release the flavors.
  3. Combine stuffing mixture: In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, and chopped fresh parsley. In a separate bowl, whisk together the broth and lightly beaten eggs. Pour the liquid mixture over the bread mixture and gently toss until evenly moistened, ensuring the bread is moist but not soggy. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes to absorb the liquid.
  4. Bake the stuffing: Transfer the mixture to a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and cover with foil. Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and continue baking for an additional 15–20 minutes until the top turns golden brown and crisp. Serve warm.

Notes

  • For a Southern variation, substitute cornbread for the bread cubes.
  • Add cooked sausage, diced apples, or dried cranberries for additional flavor twists.
  • This stuffing can be assembled a day ahead and baked just before serving for convenience.
