Ingredients
Scale
Beef Patties
- 1 lb ground beef (80/20), divided into 4 equal balls
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- Cooking oil or spray for griddle
- 4 slices American cheese
Buns & Toppings
- 2 burger buns
- Butter for toasting
- 4–6 dill pickle slices
- Shredded lettuce
- 2–4 tomato slices
- 2 tbsp diced onion or grilled onions
Sauces
- 2 tbsp mayonnaise
- 1 tbsp ketchup
- 1 tbsp yellow mustard
Instructions
- Preheat and prepare griddle: Heat a cast iron skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and lightly oil the surface to prevent sticking.
- Form and smash patties: Place two beef balls on the hot griddle, then immediately smash them flat to about 1/4 inch thickness using a heavy spatula or burger press. Season with salt and pepper.
- Cook patties: Cook the smashed patties for 2–3 minutes until the edges become crispy and browned. Flip them over, place a slice of American cheese on each, and cook another 1–2 minutes until the cheese melts.
- Repeat for second burger: Repeat the smashing and cooking process for the second set of beef balls to make the second burger.
- Toast buns: Butter the cut sides of the burger buns and toast them cut-side down in a separate pan or on the griddle until golden brown.
- Assemble burgers: Spread mayonnaise, ketchup, and mustard on the top and bottom buns. Layer shredded lettuce, tomato slices, dill pickles, and onions on the bottom bun. Stack both cheesy patties on top, then cover with the top bun.
- Serve immediately: Serve the burgers hot with fries or tater tots for a complete meal.
Notes
- Use a burger press or place parchment paper between the spatula and patty when smashing to prevent sticking.
- American cheese and classic white hamburger buns help achieve an authentic Sonic-style flavor.
- Adjust toppings to personal preference or add grilled onions for extra flavor.
