Ingredients
Scale
Sausage Mixture
- 1 lb pork sausage
- 1 Tbsp dried minced onion flakes
- 2½ cups frozen cubed hash browns
Casserole Base
- 5 large eggs
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 1¾ cups milk
- 1 cup Bisquick
- ¼ tsp salt
- ¼ tsp pepper
Instructions
- Cook the Sausage and Hash Browns: In a large skillet over medium-high heat, cook the pork sausage and dried minced onion flakes for about 5 minutes or until the meat crumbles. Then stir in the frozen cubed hash browns and continue cooking for 5 to 7 minutes until the sausage is no longer pink and the potatoes are lightly browned. Drain this mixture on paper towels to remove excess grease, then spoon it into a greased 13- x 9-inch baking dish and sprinkle shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the top.
- Prepare the Egg Mixture: In a separate bowl, whisk together the 5 large eggs, 1¾ cups milk, 1 cup Bisquick, ¼ tsp salt, and ¼ tsp pepper until fully combined. Pour this mixture evenly over the sausage, hash browns, and cheese in the baking dish. Cover with aluminum foil and refrigerate for at least 8 hours or overnight to allow the flavors to meld and the Bisquick to hydrate.
- Preheat the Oven: When ready to bake, remove the casserole from the refrigerator and preheat your oven to 350ºF (175ºC).
- Bake the Casserole: Place the covered casserole in the preheated oven and bake for 45 minutes. Then remove the foil and continue baking uncovered for an additional 10 to 15 minutes, or until a wooden pick inserted into the center comes out clean, indicating the casserole is fully cooked through. Take the casserole out of the oven and let it stand for 5 minutes before serving to set.
Notes
- For an even richer flavor, use sharp cheddar cheese or a blend of cheeses.
- You can prepare the casserole the night before and bake it fresh in the morning for a convenient breakfast.
- Make sure to drain the sausage and hash brown mixture well to avoid a soggy casserole.
- Substitute Bisquick with your favorite pancake or baking mix if desired, but consistency might vary slightly.
- For a lower fat version, use turkey sausage and reduced-fat cheese and milk.
