Description
A comforting and hearty dish featuring seasoned ground beef smothered in a savory gravy and served over creamy mashed potatoes. This classic recipe is perfect for a cozy family dinner.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Ground Beef:
- 1 pound ground beef (85% lean)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (if needed)
For Serving:
- 4 cups mashed potatoes (prepared ahead or instant)
Instructions
- Cook the Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it apart as it cooks. If there is excess grease, drain it off, leaving about 1 tablespoon.
- Sauté Onion and Garlic: Add the chopped onion and garlic to the skillet and cook for 3–4 minutes until softened.
- Add Flour and Broth: Sprinkle the flour over the beef mixture, stir well to coat, and cook for 1 minute. Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring to avoid lumps.
- Season and Simmer: Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, and pepper. Simmer for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the gravy thickens.
- Adjust and Serve: Taste the gravy, adjust seasoning if needed, and serve hot over warm mashed potatoes.
Notes
- For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of heavy cream or a teaspoon of Dijon mustard to the gravy.
- This dish pairs well with green peas or steamed broccoli on the side.
