Scale
Main Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small yellow onion, diced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 1 1/2 cups beef broth
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme
- 4 cups mashed potatoes, prepared
- 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley, optional
Instructions
- Brown the Ground Beef: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef until browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain off any excess fat if necessary to avoid greasiness.
- Sauté Onions and Garlic: Add the diced onion and minced garlic to the skillet with the beef. Sauté for 2–3 minutes until the onions soften and become translucent, releasing their aroma.
- Coat with Flour: Sprinkle the all-purpose flour evenly over the meat mixture. Stir well to coat everything, and cook for about 1 minute to eliminate the raw flour taste, which also helps thicken the gravy later.
- Add Liquids and Seasonings: Slowly pour in the beef broth while stirring continuously to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, salt, black pepper, and dried thyme. Stir to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
- Simmer and Thicken: Reduce heat to low and let the mixture simmer gently for 5–7 minutes until the gravy thickens into a rich consistency. Taste and adjust seasoning if needed.
- Serve Over Mashed Potatoes: Spoon the hot beef and gravy mixture generously over warm mashed potatoes. Garnish with chopped fresh parsley if desired for added color and flavor.
Notes
- You can substitute ground turkey or chicken for a leaner alternative.
- For extra richness, add a splash of cream or a pat of butter to the gravy just before serving.
- Be sure to stir continuously while adding the beef broth to avoid lumps in the gravy.
