Description

This Fried Bologna Sandwich is a nostalgic American comfort food classic, featuring thick-cut bologna fried to crispy perfection, layered with melted cheese and fresh vegetables inside toasted buns. Quick and satisfying, it’s perfect for an easy lunch or casual dinner.

Ingredients

Scale

Sandwich

  • 4 slices thick-cut bologna
  • 2 teaspoons butter
  • 2 sandwich buns or slices of bread (toasted if desired)
  • 2 slices American or cheddar cheese

Condiments & Toppings

  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 lettuce leaves
  • 2 tomato slices
  • 2 pickle slices (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the skillet: Heat a skillet over medium heat and add the butter. Let the butter melt completely, ensuring an even coating on the pan for frying.
  2. Prevent bologna curling: Make a small cut in the center of each thick-cut bologna slice to stop it from curling as it fries.
  3. Fry the bologna: Place the bologna slices in the skillet. Fry each side for 2 to 3 minutes until the edges are browned and crispy, resulting in a flavorful texture.
  4. Prepare the buns: While the bologna cooks, spread mayonnaise and yellow mustard on the inside of each sandwich bun or slice of bread. Toast the bread beforehand if preferred.
  5. Assemble the sandwich: Place the fried bologna slices on the bottom half of each bun. Add a slice of American or cheddar cheese on top of the bologna, followed by a leaf of lettuce, a slice of tomato, and pickles if desired.
  6. Finish and serve: Top with the other half of the bun or bread slice, press lightly to hold everything together, and serve the sandwich warm for the best experience.

Notes

  • For a classic diner-style sandwich, use white bread and American cheese.
  • Add a fried egg on top of the bologna for a heartier, more filling version.
  • To make this sandwich dairy-free, omit the cheese and use butter substitutes like margarine or oil.
