Description

A quick and flavorful Egg Roll Stir Fry featuring ground pork, fresh ginger, garlic, and a vibrant medley of cabbage and carrots, tossed in a savory Asian-inspired sauce. Perfectly paired with rice and topped with crunchy wonton strips and fresh green onions for a delightful meal ready in just 25 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Protein and Aromatics

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound ground pork
  • 2-inch piece of fresh ginger, minced
  • 4 cloves garlic, minced

Sauce and Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • ½ teaspoon Chinese five-spice powder
  • ¼ cup low sodium soy sauce
  • 2 teaspoons sesame oil
  • 2 tablespoons chili paste
  • Kosher salt, adjust to taste

Vegetables and Toppings

  • 16 ounces coleslaw mix (preferably with thinly sliced carrots)
  • Thinly sliced green onions (for topping)
  • Wonton strips (for topping)

Serving Suggestion

  • Cooked rice (for serving)

Instructions

  1. Heat the oil and cook pork: Warm the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground pork, minced ginger, and minced garlic, breaking up the meat as it cooks. Continue cooking until the pork is fully cooked through. Drain any excess liquid from the pan, if necessary.
  2. Add seasonings and create sauce: Sprinkle the cooked pork with cornstarch and Chinese five-spice powder, stirring well to coat the meat evenly. Pour in the low sodium soy sauce, sesame oil, and chili paste. Cook and stir for about 2 minutes until the sauce thickens and coats the pork nicely.
  3. Incorporate vegetables and steam: Add the coleslaw mix to the skillet and toss it with the pork and sauce. Cover the skillet with a lid and allow the cabbage mixture to steam for 2 to 3 minutes, until the cabbage turns bright green and slightly wilted.
  4. Finalize seasoning and serve: Remove the lid, taste the stir fry, and add kosher salt only if needed. Serve the egg roll stir fry hot over cooked rice. Garnish with thinly sliced green onions and top with crunchy wonton strips for added texture and flavor.

Notes

  • Use low sodium soy sauce to better control the saltiness of the dish.
  • Wonton strips add crunch but can be omitted or substituted with fried noodles for different textures.
  • For a vegetarian version, substitute ground pork with firm tofu and omit chili paste if desired.
  • Adjust the amount of chili paste to control heat level according to your preference.
  • Drain excess fat after cooking pork for a lighter dish if desired.
