Description

This Easy Tuna Casserole is a classic American comfort dish featuring tender egg noodles, flaky tuna, creamy mushroom soup, and a crunchy buttery cracker topping. Perfect for a quick family dinner, it’s flavorful, cheesy, and simple to prepare.

Ingredients

Scale

Base Ingredients

  • 12 ounces egg noodles
  • 2 cans (5 ounces each) tuna in water, drained and flaked
  • 1 can (10.5 ounces) cream of mushroom soup
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup milk

Seasonings and Topping

  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • Salt and black pepper to taste
  • 1/2 cup crushed buttery crackers or breadcrumbs
  • 2 tablespoons butter, melted

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s hot and ready once the casserole is assembled.
  2. Cook Noodles: Boil a large pot of salted water and cook the egg noodles according to package instructions until al dente. Drain well and return them to the pot.
  3. Combine Ingredients: Add the drained tuna, cream of mushroom soup, frozen peas, shredded cheddar cheese, milk, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, and black pepper to the noodles. Stir thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly mixed.
  4. Transfer to Baking Dish: Pour the noodle mixture into a greased 9×13-inch baking dish and spread it out evenly.
  5. Prepare Topping: In a small bowl, combine the crushed buttery crackers or breadcrumbs with the melted butter. Sprinkle this mixture evenly over the casserole.
  6. Bake: Place the casserole uncovered in the preheated oven and bake for 20–25 minutes, until the topping is golden brown and the casserole is hot and bubbling throughout.
  7. Cool and Serve: Allow the casserole to cool slightly for a few minutes before serving, so it sets and is easier to serve.

Notes

  • You can substitute frozen peas with canned peas or mixed vegetables for variety.
  • For an extra crunchy topping, broil the casserole for the last 1–2 minutes of baking, keeping a close eye to prevent burning.
  • Add a dash of hot sauce to the mixture for a spicy kick if desired.
