Ingredients
Scale
Filling Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon olive oil
- 1 small onion, finely chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 lb ground beef
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
- 1/2 teaspoon paprika
- 2 tablespoons tomato paste
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1/2 cup beef broth
- 1/2 cup frozen peas and carrots
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
Pie Crust and Topping
- 1 package refrigerated pie crusts (2 crusts)
- 1 egg, beaten (for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) to ensure it’s ready for baking the meat pie once assembled.
- Sauté Aromatics: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the finely chopped onion and cook for 3 to 4 minutes until it becomes soft and translucent. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional minute to release its aroma.
- Cook Ground Beef: Add the ground beef to the skillet and cook until it is fully browned, breaking it up with a spoon as it cooks. Drain any excess fat if necessary to keep the filling from being greasy.
- Season the Filling: Season the beef mixture with salt, black pepper, dried thyme, and paprika. Stir well to evenly distribute the spices.
- Add Tomato Paste and Worcestershire Sauce: Mix in the tomato paste and Worcestershire sauce for depth of flavor. Then sprinkle in the all-purpose flour and cook for 1 minute, which will help thicken the filling.
- Simmer Filling: Pour in the beef broth and bring the mixture to a simmer. Stir in the frozen peas and carrots, cooking for 5 to 6 minutes until the filling thickens slightly. Remove from heat and allow it to cool slightly.
- Assemble the Pie: Place one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish, pressing gently to fit the edges. Pour the cooled meat filling evenly into the crust. Cover with the second pie crust, trim any excess dough, and crimp the edges tightly to seal the pie.
- Prepare for Baking: Cut 2 to 3 small slits in the top crust to allow steam to escape during baking. Brush the surface with the beaten egg to create a shiny, golden finish once baked.
- Bake the Pie: Bake in the preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and cooked through. Then remove from the oven and let rest for 10 minutes before slicing and serving to allow the filling to set.
Notes
- For extra richness, add a handful of shredded cheddar cheese to the meat mixture before baking.
- You can substitute puff pastry for the pie crust for a flakier finished texture.
