Description

Chicken Stuffed French Bread is a savory and cheesy baked dish featuring a crusty French bread loaf filled with a rich mixture of shredded chicken, sour cream, mayonnaise, and cheeses, seasoned with garlic, onion powder, and fresh herbs. Perfect as a comforting main course or party appetizer, this recipe combines creamy, cheesy flavors with a crisp toasted bread base.

Ingredients

Scale

Bread

  • 1 large loaf French bread
  • Butter for toasting

Filling

  • 2 cups cooked shredded chicken
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 1/2 cup mayonnaise
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
  • 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 2 green onions, chopped
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon onion powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Prepare Bread: Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C). Cut the French bread loaf in half lengthwise. Scoop out the soft bread from the center to create a shallow trough in both halves, leaving about a 1/2-inch thick base. Lightly butter the cut sides to aid in toasting and moisture retention. Place the halves cut-side up on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 5 to 6 minutes until the bread starts to crisp but isn’t fully browned.
  2. Mix Filling: In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded cooked chicken, sour cream, mayonnaise, shredded cheddar cheese, grated Parmesan cheese, chopped green onions, garlic powder, onion powder, salt, black pepper, and optional chopped fresh parsley. Stir well until all ingredients are thoroughly combined, creating a creamy and flavorful chicken mixture.
  3. Stuff Bread and Bake: Evenly spoon the chicken mixture into the toasted bread halves, spreading it to cover the entire length. Return the stuffed bread halves to the baking sheet and bake at 375°F for 15 to 18 minutes or until the filling is heated through, bubbly, and the cheese is melted. For a golden and lightly crisp top, optionally broil the stuffed bread for 1 to 2 minutes at the end, watching closely to prevent burning.
  4. Serve: Remove the stuffed bread from the oven and allow it to cool slightly. Slice into 6 portions and serve warm as a hearty main dish or as a shareable party appetizer.

Notes

  • Use rotisserie chicken for a quick and effortless shortcut.
  • Add extra flavor by mixing in crumbled bacon, chopped spinach, or diced jalapeños into the filling.
  • This recipe works well as a party appetizer if sliced into smaller, bite-sized pieces.
