Ingredients
Scale
Pizza Dough
- 1 pound pizza dough, thawed if frozen (half of homemade pizza dough recipe if using)
Fillings
- 1/2 cup marinara sauce
- 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese, divided
- 1/8–1/4 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
- 1 cup chopped pepperoni (about 35 slices / 4 ounces)
- 1 cup cooked and crumbled Italian sausage (about 1/4 pound)
- 1/3 cup finely diced green bell pepper
- 1/4 cup grated Parmesan cheese
Garnish
- Minced fresh parsley
Instructions
- Preheat Oven and Prepare Pan: Preheat your oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Lightly coat a 9-inch cast iron skillet or a 9-inch round oven-safe baking pan with nonstick spray to prevent sticking.
- Roll Out Dough: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the 1 pound of pizza dough into a 16×10-inch rectangle to create an even base for the fillings.
- Brush with Sauce: Brush the surface of the dough evenly with 1/2 cup marinara sauce, leaving a 1/2-inch border around the edges to seal the roll later.
- Add Fillings: Sprinkle half of the shredded mozzarella cheese (1/2 cup) evenly over the sauce, then sprinkle crushed red pepper flakes to taste. Layer the chopped pepperoni, cooked crumbled Italian sausage, diced green bell pepper, and grated Parmesan cheese evenly over the dough.
- Roll the Dough: Starting with one of the long sides, carefully roll the dough tightly into a jelly-roll style log. Pinch the seam to seal the roll and keep the fillings inside.
- Slice the Roll: Using a sharp knife, cut the dough log into 8 even slices to make individual pizza rolls.
- Arrange in Pan: Place the cut pieces into the prepared skillet or pan cut side down, leaving a little space between the rolls to allow for expansion while baking.
- Bake Initial: Bake the pizza rolls in the oven for 25 minutes at 400°F, allowing the dough to cook and start to crisp up.
- Add Cheese and Continue Baking: Remove the pan and sprinkle the remaining 1/2 cup mozzarella cheese over the rolls. Return to the oven and bake for an additional 5 to 10 minutes until the cheese is melted, golden brown, and the dough is fully cooked.
- Garnish and Serve: Remove from the oven, garnish the pizza rolls with freshly minced parsley for color and flavor, then serve warm and enjoy!
Notes
- If you don’t have a cast iron skillet, an oven-safe round baking pan works perfectly.
- The red pepper flakes can be adjusted based on your spice preference or omitted for a milder taste.
- Leftovers can be stored in the refrigerator and reheated in the oven to maintain crispiness.
- Feel free to customize fillings with your favorite pizza toppings like mushrooms or olives.
- Using pre-cooked sausage saves time and ensures it is fully cooked inside the rolls.
