Description

This Cheesy Baked Asparagus recipe is a delicious and easy side dish that features fresh asparagus spears baked in a creamy garlic sauce and topped with a blend of parmesan and mozzarella cheeses. With a hint of red pepper flakes for a subtle kick, it’s perfect for any occasion and ready in under 30 minutes.

Ingredients

Scale

Asparagus

  • 2 lb fresh asparagus spears, trimmed
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • 4 garlic cloves, minced

Dairy & Seasonings

  • ¾ cup heavy cream
  • ½ cup grated parmesan cheese
  • 1½ cups shredded mozzarella cheese
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes, or to taste

Instructions

  1. Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 400ºF (200ºC). Lightly spray a 9×13-inch baking dish with cooking spray to prevent sticking.
  2. Prepare Asparagus: Place the trimmed asparagus spears evenly in the prepared baking dish. Season with salt, pepper, and sprinkle the minced garlic evenly over the asparagus. Pour the heavy cream evenly over the asparagus to coat.
  3. Add Cheese Toppings: Sprinkle the grated parmesan cheese and shredded mozzarella cheese evenly on top of the asparagus and cream. Add red pepper flakes for a touch of heat, adjusting to your preference.
  4. Bake: Bake the asparagus uncovered in the preheated oven for 20 to 25 minutes, until the asparagus is tender and the cheese is melted.
  5. Broil for Finish: Turn on the broiler and broil the asparagus for 2 to 3 minutes or until the cheese is golden brown and bubbly. Watch closely to avoid burning.

Notes

  • Trim the woody ends off the asparagus for the best texture.
  • Use fresh garlic for maximum flavor; powdered garlic can be used as a substitute but will alter the taste.
  • To make this dish less spicy, reduce or omit the red pepper flakes.
  • This dish can be prepared ahead and baked just before serving.
  • For a lower-fat version, substitute heavy cream with half-and-half or whole milk, but the sauce will be less rich.
