Ingredients
Scale
Pastry
- 1 sheet puff pastry (thawed)
Filling
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 2 large yellow onions (thinly sliced)
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 teaspoon fresh thyme leaves (or 1/4 teaspoon dried thyme)
- 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
- 1/2 cup shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese
Finish
- 1 egg (beaten, for egg wash)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) to prepare for baking the tart.
- Caramelize the onions: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the thinly sliced onions along with salt, black pepper, and thyme. Cook gently, stirring often, for 25 to 30 minutes until the onions become soft, golden, and caramelized. Stir in the balsamic vinegar and cook an additional 2 minutes to enhance flavor. Remove from heat and let the mixture cool slightly.
- Prepare the puff pastry: On a lightly floured surface, roll out the thawed puff pastry sheet. Transfer it to a parchment-lined baking sheet. Using a sharp knife, score a 1/2-inch border around the edges of the pastry, being careful not to cut all the way through. Prick the center within the border several times with a fork to prevent bubbling during baking.
- Assemble the tart: Evenly spread the caramelized onion mixture inside the scored border of the puff pastry. Sprinkle the shredded Gruyère or Swiss cheese evenly over the onions. Brush the exposed edges of the pastry with the beaten egg to give it a golden, glossy finish.
- Bake the tart: Place the baking sheet in the preheated oven and bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until the puff pastry is risen, golden brown, and crispy.
- Cool and serve: Remove the tart from the oven and let it cool for about 5 minutes to allow the filling to set slightly. Slice into portions and serve warm or at room temperature.
