Description

A flavorful and hearty Brussels Sprouts and Sausage Stir-Fry, combining crispy sautéed Brussels sprouts with savory smoked sausage, aromatic spices, and a touch of sweetness. This quick and easy skillet dish makes a perfect weeknight dinner that’s both satisfying and packed with vibrant flavors.

Ingredients

Scale

Main Ingredients

  • 1 lb (450 g) Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved (quartered if large)
  • 2–3 links (8 oz / 225 g) smoked or chicken sausage, sliced
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil (or sesame oil)
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 small onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 red bell pepper, thinly sliced (optional)

Seasonings and Garnishes

  • 1 tbsp soy sauce
  • 1 tsp Chinese five-spice powder
  • 1 tbsp honey or brown sugar
  • ½ tsp crushed red pepper flakes (optional)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 2 tbsp chopped green onions (for garnish)
  • 1 tsp sesame seeds (optional, for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Prepare Brussels Sprouts: Trim the Brussels sprouts by cutting off the stem ends and removing any yellow or damaged leaves. Halve them for even cooking; quarter them if they are very large. Set aside.
  2. Cook Sausage: Heat 1 tablespoon of oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the sliced sausage links and cook for 4 to 5 minutes until they are nicely browned and slightly crisp on the edges. Remove the sausage from the skillet and set aside.
  3. Sauté Vegetables: Add the remaining tablespoon of oil to the same skillet. Introduce the Brussels sprouts, thinly sliced onion, and optional red bell pepper. Cook these vegetables, stirring occasionally, for 6 to 8 minutes or until the Brussels sprouts are tender and have developed a light char.
  4. Add Flavors: Stir in the minced garlic along with soy sauce, Chinese five-spice powder, honey (or brown sugar), and the optional crushed red pepper flakes. Cook this mixture for 1 to 2 minutes until the dish is fragrant and the seasonings are well combined.
  5. Combine Sausage and Adjust Seasoning: Return the cooked sausage slices to the skillet, toss everything together thoroughly. Taste and adjust seasoning with salt and black pepper as desired.
  6. Serve and Garnish: Serve the stir-fry hot, garnished with chopped green onions and optional sesame seeds. It pairs beautifully with steamed rice or can be enjoyed on its own as a hearty meal.

Notes

  • Brussels sprouts can be quartered if particularly large to ensure even cooking.
  • Use smoked sausage for a stronger, smokier flavor or chicken sausage for a lighter option.
  • Adjust the amount of crushed red pepper flakes according to your spice preference.
  • Sesame oil adds a nutty depth but can be substituted with vegetable oil if preferred.
  • This dish can be customized by adding other vegetables like mushrooms or snap peas.
  • Serve immediately for the best texture; leftovers can be reheated but may soften slightly.
