Ingredients
Scale
Filling
- 31.5 ounces blueberry pie filling (two 15.75-ounce cans)
- 1–2 cups fresh blueberries (optional)
Topping
- 15.25 ounces yellow cake mix
- ½ cup salted butter, cold
Instructions
- Preheat the oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C) and allow it to fully preheat while preparing the rest of your ingredients.
- Prepare filling layer: Spread the blueberry pie filling evenly into the bottom of a 9”x13” baking dish to create the juicy base for the dump cake.
- Add cake mix topping: Sprinkle the dry yellow cake mix evenly over the entire surface of the blueberry pie filling, ensuring full coverage for an even crust.
- Add butter: Slice the cold salted butter into very thin pats and distribute them over the top of the dry cake mix layer. Cover as much of the cake mix as possible to ensure rich, buttery flavor and proper browning. The cold butter is easier to handle and gives the best texture.
- Add fresh blueberries: If desired, sprinkle 1-2 cups of fresh blueberries evenly on top of the butter-covered cake mix for added freshness and texture.
- Bake the cake: Place the baking dish in the preheated oven and bake for 30 minutes or until the topping is golden brown and the blueberry filling is bubbling around the edges. If you notice any dry cake mix in the last few minutes of baking, add additional pats of butter over those areas and bake a little longer for a moist topping.
- Rest and serve: Remove the dump cake from the oven and let it rest for 15 minutes. This resting period allows the blueberry filling to thicken slightly so it won’t be overly runny when serving. Enjoy warm or at room temperature.
Notes
- Cold butter works best for evenly distributing over the dry cake mix without melting too quickly.
- If you prefer, use fresh blueberries only or add more fresh blueberries on top for a fresher flavor.
- Resting the cake before serving improves texture and makes serving easier by thickening the filling.
- Use a 9”x13” baking dish for even baking and portion sizing.
- This dessert can be served with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for extra indulgence.
