Description

Blackberry Dumplings are a classic Southern American dessert featuring tender biscuit-like dumplings cooked atop a warm, sweet blackberry syrup. This old-fashioned summer treat combines fruity sweetness with a comforting dough, perfect for family gatherings or cozy nights.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Blackberry Syrup:

  • 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tablespoon lemon juice
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)

For the Dumplings:

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons sugar
  • 1 tablespoon butter (softened)
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Blackberry Syrup: In a large saucepan or deep skillet, combine the blackberries, sugar, water, lemon juice, and cinnamon if using. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries are softened and the syrup begins to form.
  2. Make the Dumpling Dough: While the syrup simmers, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a medium bowl. Cut in the softened butter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Stir in the milk just until combined, being careful not to overmix to ensure tender dumplings.
  3. Cook the Dumplings: Reduce the berry syrup to a low simmer. Using a spoon, gently drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough on top of the hot blackberry mixture. Cover the skillet tightly with a lid and cook undisturbed for 12–15 minutes until the dumplings have puffed and are cooked through.
  4. Rest and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and let the dumplings rest for 5 minutes. Serve the dumplings warm, spooning extra blackberry syrup over the top. For an extra indulgence, consider topping with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.

Notes

  • Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for added richness.
  • Use self-rising flour instead of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt for a quicker preparation.
