Description
Blackberry Dumplings are a classic Southern American dessert featuring tender biscuit-like dumplings cooked atop a warm, sweet blackberry syrup. This old-fashioned summer treat combines fruity sweetness with a comforting dough, perfect for family gatherings or cozy nights.
Ingredients
Scale
For the Blackberry Syrup:
- 4 cups fresh or frozen blackberries
- 1 cup granulated sugar
- 2 cups water
- 1 tablespoon lemon juice
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon (optional)
For the Dumplings:
- 1 cup all-purpose flour
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 2 tablespoons sugar
- 1 tablespoon butter (softened)
- 1/2 cup milk
Instructions
- Prepare the Blackberry Syrup: In a large saucepan or deep skillet, combine the blackberries, sugar, water, lemon juice, and cinnamon if using. Bring the mixture to a gentle boil over medium heat, then reduce to a simmer. Cook for 5–7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the berries are softened and the syrup begins to form.
- Make the Dumpling Dough: While the syrup simmers, mix together the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar in a medium bowl. Cut in the softened butter until the mixture becomes crumbly. Stir in the milk just until combined, being careful not to overmix to ensure tender dumplings.
- Cook the Dumplings: Reduce the berry syrup to a low simmer. Using a spoon, gently drop spoonfuls of the dumpling dough on top of the hot blackberry mixture. Cover the skillet tightly with a lid and cook undisturbed for 12–15 minutes until the dumplings have puffed and are cooked through.
- Rest and Serve: Remove the skillet from heat and let the dumplings rest for 5 minutes. Serve the dumplings warm, spooning extra blackberry syrup over the top. For an extra indulgence, consider topping with vanilla ice cream or whipped cream.
Notes
- Serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream for added richness.
- Use self-rising flour instead of all-purpose flour, baking powder, and salt for a quicker preparation.
