Featuring flavorful cooked pork sausage layered with shredded cheddar cheese and a fluffy egg and Bisquick batter, this casserole is baked to golden perfection for a satisfying and protein-packed meal.
Ingredients
Scale
Meat
- 1 pound pork sausage (Jimmy Dean)
Cheese
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
Batter
- 1 cup Bisquick
- 2 cups milk
- 6 eggs (slightly beaten)
Seasonings
- 1 teaspoon ground mustard
- 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano
Instructions
- Prepare the baking dish: Grease a 2-quart casserole dish or an 8×8-inch or 11×7-inch pan to prevent sticking during baking.
- Cook the sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the pork sausage, stirring occasionally until it is fully cooked and no longer pink. Drain off excess grease to keep the casserole from becoming greasy.
- Layer the ingredients: Spread the cooked sausage evenly in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the sausage layer. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the slightly beaten eggs, milk, Bisquick, ground mustard, and dried oregano until smooth. Pour this mixture over the sausage and cheese in the casserole dish.
- Chill the casserole: Cover the dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and no longer than 24 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the batter to set.
- Bake the casserole: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the cover and bake the casserole uncovered for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is set and lightly golden.
Notes
- Allowing the casserole to chill overnight enhances the flavors and improves texture.
- You can substitute the pork sausage with turkey sausage for a leaner option.
- Feel free to add vegetables such as diced bell peppers, onions, or mushrooms to the sausage layer for extra flavor and nutrition.
- Use a toothpick or knife to check for doneness; it should come out clean when the casserole is fully baked.
- Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator and consume within 3-4 days for best quality.
