Description

This Bisquick Sausage Breakfast Casserole is a hearty and savory dish perfect for family breakfasts or brunch gatherings. Featuring flavorful cooked pork sausage layered with shredded cheddar cheese and a fluffy egg and Bisquick batter, this casserole is baked to golden perfection for a satisfying and protein-packed meal.

Ingredients

Scale

Meat

  • 1 pound pork sausage (Jimmy Dean)

Cheese

  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese

Batter

  • 1 cup Bisquick
  • 2 cups milk
  • 6 eggs (slightly beaten)

Seasonings

  • 1 teaspoon ground mustard
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano

Instructions

  1. Prepare the baking dish: Grease a 2-quart casserole dish or an 8×8-inch or 11×7-inch pan to prevent sticking during baking.
  2. Cook the sausage: In a skillet over medium heat, cook the pork sausage, stirring occasionally until it is fully cooked and no longer pink. Drain off excess grease to keep the casserole from becoming greasy.
  3. Layer the ingredients: Spread the cooked sausage evenly in the prepared baking dish. Sprinkle the shredded cheddar cheese evenly over the sausage layer. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the slightly beaten eggs, milk, Bisquick, ground mustard, and dried oregano until smooth. Pour this mixture over the sausage and cheese in the casserole dish.
  4. Chill the casserole: Cover the dish with plastic wrap or foil and refrigerate for at least 4 hours and no longer than 24 hours to allow the flavors to meld and the batter to set.
  5. Bake the casserole: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Remove the cover and bake the casserole uncovered for 50 to 60 minutes, or until a knife inserted into the center comes out clean and the top is set and lightly golden.

Notes

  • Allowing the casserole to chill overnight enhances the flavors and improves texture.
  • You can substitute the pork sausage with turkey sausage for a leaner option.
  • Feel free to add vegetables such as diced bell peppers, onions, or mushrooms to the sausage layer for extra flavor and nutrition.
  • Use a toothpick or knife to check for doneness; it should come out clean when the casserole is fully baked.
  • Store leftovers covered in the refrigerator and consume within 3-4 days for best quality.
