Ingredients
Scale
For the Rissoles:
- 1 pound ground beef
- ½ cup breadcrumbs
- 1 small onion (grated)
- 1 carrot (peeled and grated)
- 2 cloves garlic (minced)
- 1 egg
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tablespoon ketchup (or tomato paste)
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- ½ teaspoon salt
- ½ teaspoon black pepper
- 2 tablespoons olive oil (for frying)
For the Gravy:
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
- 2 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions
- Prepare the Rissole Mixture: In a large bowl, combine the ground beef, breadcrumbs, grated onion and carrot, minced garlic, egg, Worcestershire sauce, ketchup (or tomato paste), dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are evenly distributed. Shape the mixture into 6 to 8 evenly sized patties.
- Cook the Rissoles: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Carefully place the rissoles in the skillet and cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side until they are browned on the outside and fully cooked through. Remove the rissoles from the skillet and keep them warm while you prepare the gravy.
- Make the Gravy: Using the same skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Stir in the all-purpose flour and cook for about 1 minute to form a roux, which will thicken the gravy. Gradually whisk in the beef broth, stirring constantly to prevent lumps. Add Worcestershire sauce, onion powder, and season with salt and pepper to taste. Let the gravy simmer for 3 to 4 minutes until it thickens.
- Combine and Serve: Return the cooked rissoles to the skillet with the gravy. Spoon gravy over each rissole and allow them to simmer together for an additional 2 to 3 minutes to meld the flavors and heat through. Serve hot for a hearty meal.
