Description
Bangers and Mash is a classic British comfort dish featuring flavorful sausages served over creamy mashed potatoes, topped with rich onion gravy. This hearty meal combines simple ingredients with straightforward cooking techniques to deliver a satisfying and traditional dinner perfect for any day of the week.
Ingredients
Scale
Sausages
- 1 lb quality sausages (pork, chicken, or vegetarian)
Potatoes and Mash
- 2 lbs starchy potatoes (like Russets), peeled and chopped
- 4 tbsp butter
- ½ cup milk or cream
- Salt and pepper to taste
Onion Gravy
- 2 medium onions, sliced
- 1 cup low-sodium beef broth
Instructions
- Cook the Sausages: In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the sausages until they are golden brown on all sides and cooked through, about 10 minutes. Turn them regularly to ensure even browning.
- Boil Potatoes: Meanwhile, bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the peeled and chopped potatoes and cook until they are tender when pierced with a fork, approximately 15 to 20 minutes. Drain well.
- Make Onion Gravy: In the same skillet used for the sausages, add the sliced onions and sauté them over medium heat until they become caramelized and golden, about 10 minutes. Pour in the low-sodium beef broth and let the mixture simmer until the gravy thickens slightly, around 5 to 7 minutes. Stir occasionally.
- Mash Potatoes: Return the drained potatoes to the pot. Add butter, milk or cream, and season with salt and pepper. Mash everything together until you achieve a creamy and smooth consistency.
- Assemble: Plate a generous serving of mashed potatoes, top with the cooked sausages, and spoon over the rich onion gravy. Serve immediately while warm.
Notes
- Use quality sausages for best flavor—pork is traditional, but chicken or vegetarian options work well.
- Russet potatoes or other starchy varieties give the fluffiest mashed potatoes.
- For a richer mash, you can add extra butter or cream to taste.
- Caramelize onions slowly over medium heat to develop a deep, sweet flavor in the gravy.
- Beef broth can be substituted with vegetable broth for a lighter or vegetarian-friendly version.
- Adjust salt and pepper seasonings according to taste preferences.
