Description

Indulge in the cozy flavors of fall with this delicious Apple Upside Down Cake. A moist and tender cake topped with caramelized apples, this dessert is perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

For the topping:

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 2 medium apples (such as Honeycrisp or Granny Smith), peeled, cored, and thinly sliced

For the cake:

  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 cup milk

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven: Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan and line the bottom with parchment paper.
  2. Prepare the topping: Melt 1/4 cup butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar and cook until dissolved and bubbly, about 2 minutes. Pour into the prepared pan and spread evenly. Arrange the apple slices over the brown sugar mixture.
  3. Make the cake batter: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and salt. In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each, then mix in the vanilla. Alternate adding the flour mixture and milk in three additions, beginning and ending with the flour. Mix until just combined.
  4. Bake: Pour the batter over the apples and smooth the top. Bake for 40–45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10–15 minutes, then carefully invert onto a serving plate.

Notes

  • Best served warm with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream.
  • Try adding a pinch of nutmeg to the batter for extra warmth.
